5kW solar system installed on an Indian home rooftop with price and subsidy breakdown

A 5kW rooftop system is the size Indian families land on when one air conditioner is no longer the whole story. Two or three ACs, a larger home, a monthly bill that crosses ₹4,000, and suddenly 3kW does not cover the day.

This guide covers the 5 kW solar panel price in India for 2026, what changes after subsidy, how many units you can expect each day, what the system will actually run, and the question nobody else answers honestly: whether 5kW makes financial sense when the government subsidy stops increasing above 3kW. For pricing across all system sizes, see our solar panel price in India guide.

5kW solar system price in India

A complete 5kW on-grid solar system costs roughly ₹3,00,000 to ₹3,45,000 in 2026, installed. That covers panels, inverter, mounting structure, cabling, earthing, protection devices, labour, and net metering.

At roughly ₹60,000 to ₹69,000 per kW, a 5kW system is cheaper per kW than a 3kW one, because the site survey, net metering application, and crew mobilisation do not scale with size. Our full breakdown of what each line item should cost is in the solar panel installation cost breakdown.

5kW price after PM Surya Ghar subsidy

The central subsidy for a 5kW residential system is ₹78,000, credited to your bank account after commissioning and inspection.

Eligibility is unchanged from smaller systems. The installation must be residential, the modules must be on the ALMM list, and the vendor must be registered on the national portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Some states add their own incentives on top, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat and Kerala, so check your state scheme alongside the central one. Full eligibility rules and documents are in our PM Surya Ghar Yojana subsidy guide.

Is 5kW worth it when the subsidy is capped?

Here is the part most 5kW pages skip. The subsidy does not grow with your system. A 3kW buyer and a 5kW buyer both receive ₹78,000, which means the extra 2kW is entirely self-funded.

So the honest answer is conditional. 5kW is worth it if your monthly consumption genuinely exceeds roughly 450 units, because the additional generation offsets electricity you are already buying at full tariff. Every unit you export instead of consume earns you the export rate, which is typically lower than what you pay, so oversizing is the one mistake that quietly ruins solar economics.

If your bill sits closer to 350 units a month, a 3kW system will serve you better and pay back faster. Our 3kW solar system price guide covers that case in detail. Check your last twelve electricity bills before deciding, not your last two.

How many units does a 5kW system produce?

A 5kW system in India generates roughly 20 to 25 units a day as an annual average, which works out to 600 to 750 units a month.

Season

Daily output

Monthly output

Summer (March to May)

23 to 25 units

690 to 750 units

Winter (October to February)

20 to 22 units

600 to 660 units

Monsoon (June to September)

15 to 18 units

450 to 540 units

States with higher peak sun hours such as Rajasthan and Gujarat sit at the upper end. The monsoon dip is real but temporary, and panel technology affects how deep it goes: N-Type TOPCon modules hold output better in low light than conventional panels. We cover that in detail in our guide on whether solar panels work at night and in monsoon.

What can a 5kW solar system run?

A 5kW system comfortably handles a large Indian home running multiple air conditioners:

Total simultaneous load

~4,200W

That total sits comfortably under the 5,000W inverter ceiling with headroom to spare. Two 1.5 ton ACs running together is the practical answer to the most common question at this size, and yes, a third AC works if you stagger usage.

Roof space and how many panels you need

A 5kW system needs roughly 400 to 500 square feet of shadow-free roof space. The panel count depends entirely on module wattage:

  • 500Wp modules: 10 panels, around 480 to 500 sq ft
  • 550Wp modules: 9 panels, around 440 to 470 sq ft
  • 600Wp and above: 8 to 9 panels, around 400 to 440 sq ft

Fewer, higher-wattage panels mean less mounting structure, less cabling, and less labour, which is why high-efficiency modules often cost less at system level despite costing more per panel. Atal Solar's G12R 132 Series reaches up to 23.51% efficiency, and our G12R vs M10R module guide explains which format suits which roof.

Do you need a battery with 5kW?

This question comes up far more at 5kW than at smaller sizes, so it is worth answering properly.

Best for

Homes with a stable grid

Areas with long daily cuts

For most Indian homes with reliable supply, on-grid wins. Net metering makes the grid act as free storage with no efficiency loss and nothing to replace. A battery adds ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,00,000 and does not attract subsidy, so it should be a deliberate choice driven by outage frequency, not a default upgrade. If you do face long cuts, a hybrid system with a small battery backing up only essential circuits is usually smarter than backing up the whole house.

How to get an accurate 5kW quote

Three inputs decide whether 5kW is right for you: your average monthly units across a full year, your shadow-free roof area, and your outage frequency. Pull your last twelve bills rather than your last two, because the seasonal swing is exactly what determines correct sizing.

Run those numbers through our free Solar Calculator, then WhatsApp us at +91 90990 88489 or request a quote for pricing on N-Type TOPCon modules manufactured at our fully automated plant in Rajkot, Gujarat, with AI and AOI robotic inspection on every module.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 5kW solar system price in India in 2026?

Roughly ₹3,00,000 to ₹3,45,000 installed before subsidy. After the ₹78,000 PM Surya Ghar subsidy, the net cost falls to about ₹2,22,000 to ₹2,67,000. Figures as of August 2026.

How many units does a 5kW solar panel produce per day?

About 20 to 25 units a day as an annual average, or 600 to 750 units a month. Summer output reaches 23 to 25 units daily while monsoon output drops to 15 to 18.

How many ACs can a 5kW solar system run?

Two 1.5 ton inverter ACs can run simultaneously alongside a fridge, fans, lights and a washing machine, with the total load around 4,200W against a 5,000W inverter capacity. A third AC works with staggered usage.

Is the subsidy higher for 5kW than 3kW?

No. The central subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 for every residential system of 3kW and above. A 5kW buyer receives the same amount as a 3kW buyer while paying roughly ₹1,20,000 more, so 5kW makes sense mainly above about 450 units of monthly consumption.

How much roof space does a 5kW system need?

Around 400 to 500 square feet of shadow-free space. Higher-wattage modules reduce both the panel count and the area, with 600Wp modules fitting into roughly 400 to 440 sq ft.

What is the payback period for a 5kW solar system?

Typically four to six years with subsidy, depending on your tariff and how much of the generation you consume directly rather than export. Systems sized correctly to consumption pay back faster than oversized ones.
