It is the question every Indian homeowner asks before signing: what happens when the sun goes down, and what happens when it rains for three weeks straight?

The honest answer has two halves. Solar panels do not generate at night, and there is no technology that changes that. But your house still runs on solar power after dark, and your panels keep working through the monsoon at reduced output. Here is exactly how much you generate, what it costs you, and why some panels lose far less than others in weak light.

Do solar panels work at night? The short answer

No. Solar cells convert light into electricity through the photovoltaic effect, and moonlight carries roughly one four-hundred-thousandth of the energy in sunlight. It is not a matter of better panels or better technology. There is simply nothing there to convert.

Anyone selling you a panel that generates at night is selling you something else. What good systems actually do is produce a surplus during the day and give you access to that surplus at night. That mechanism is the part most buyers have never had explained properly.

So how does your house have power at night?

Through net metering. Your rooftop system is connected to the grid through a bidirectional meter that counts electricity in both directions.

During the day, your home uses what it needs and exports the surplus to the grid. Your meter runs backwards and you bank those units as credits. At night, your home draws from the grid and those banked credits are deducted. At the end of the billing cycle you pay only for the net difference, which is why a correctly sized system can bring a bill down to the minimum fixed charge.

This is why most Indian homes do not need a battery. The grid acts as your storage, at no cost, with no efficiency loss and nothing to replace in seven years. Batteries make sense only if you face long daily power cuts, because a standard grid-tied system shuts down during an outage for the safety of line workers.

Do solar panels work during monsoon and cloudy weather?

Yes, and this surprises people. Solar panels do not need direct sunlight. They convert diffuse light too, which is the scattered radiation that reaches your roof even when the sky is completely overcast.

Even on the worst monsoon day, a 3kW system is usually still producing a few units. The dip is real but temporary, and the credits you banked in summer help absorb it, which is the whole point of annual net metering.

What your generation looks like across the year

A 3kW system in most of India produces roughly 12 to 15 units a day as an annual average. That average hides a seasonal swing:

March to May: peak. Long days and clear skies push output to 14 to 15 units a day, though extreme heat slightly reduces panel efficiency.

June to September: monsoon dip. Output falls to 9 to 11 units a day, with individual heavy-rain days lower still.

October to February: good. Clear winter skies and cooler temperatures suit panels well. Days are shorter, so output settles around 12 to 13 units.

The variation is why solar systems are sized on annual consumption rather than a single month. You overproduce for eight months, underproduce for four, and the credits balance out. Peak sun hour data for your specific region is published by the National Institute of Solar Energy.

Why some panels handle weak light better than others

This is where panel choice stops being a spec-sheet detail and starts showing up on your bill.

Every panel is rated at standard test conditions: 1000 watts per square metre of irradiance. A monsoon morning might deliver 150 to 300. What separates panels is how gracefully they behave as irradiance falls, a property the industry calls weak illumination response or low irradiance performance.

N-Type TOPCon cells hold their efficiency better in these conditions than conventional P-Type Mono PERC cells for three structural reasons:

  • Higher minority carrier lifetime. N-Type silicon tolerates metallic impurities far better, so charge carriers generated by weak light are more likely to reach the contacts instead of recombining.
  • No light-induced degradation. P-Type cells lose 1 to 3% of output in their first weeks of exposure through boron-oxygen defect formation. N-Type cells are free of this mechanism.
  • Better temperature coefficient. TOPCon modules lose less output per degree of heat, which matters in humid pre-monsoon conditions where panels run hot under hazy skies.

Four things that actually hurt monsoon generation

Weather is only part of the story. These four factors cost more units than clouds do, and all four are fixable:

Shading

A single shaded cell can drag down an entire string. Trees grow, neighbours build, and the shadow map that was clean in January may not be in July. Check your roof again after a year.

Soiling

Dust bonded by humidity forms a film that rain alone does not always clear, especially at the lower edge of tilted panels. A wash before and after monsoon recovers several percent of output.

Undersized or poorly matched inverter

An inverter with weak low-voltage MPPT tracking gives up early on dim mornings, wasting generation the panels are still producing.

Water ingress at connectors

Poorly crimped MC4 connectors and unsealed junctions corrode during monsoon and cause string dropouts. This is a workmanship issue, not a weather one, which is why installation quality matters as much as panel quality.

Should you size your system for monsoon?

Generally no. Sizing for your worst month means paying for capacity that sits idle for eight months of the year. Size for annual consumption and let net metering absorb the seasonal swing.

Two exceptions. If you live in a region with an unusually long monsoon such as coastal Kerala or the northeast, add roughly 10 to 15% headroom. And if your roof is tight on space, higher-efficiency modules let you fit more capacity into the same area, which effectively buys you monsoon margin without a bigger roof.
