Commercial and industrial (C&I) solar buyers get quotes that look similar on the surface: similar wattage, similar price per watt, similar promises. The quotes that actually differ on total return rarely differ on the number printed largest on the page.
This guide sets out what C&I buyers should actually compare when choosing commercial solar panels: the technology differences that matter at scale, the specs that predict real performance, the tax and compliance factors specific to businesses, and the vendor checks that catch problems before signing.
If you already know your system size, our 600W and 635W panel guide and 10kW system guide go deeper on those specifics. This guide is the broader comparison framework behind both.
Three cell technologies compete for commercial rooftops and ground-mount sites in India today:
Mono PERC. The established baseline. Lower upfront cost per watt, 19% to 21% efficiency, a temperature coefficient around -0.35% per °C, and the widest supply availability. Still a reasonable choice for cost-sensitive, large-footprint projects with no space constraint.
N-Type TOPCon. The current mainstream upgrade. 22% to 24% efficiency, a better temperature coefficient around -0.30% per °C, zero light-induced degradation, and generally a 30-year linear power warranty against PERC's typical 25-year stepped warranty. At scale, TOPCon's lower degradation and better heat performance usually offset its modest price premium over the system's life. Our N-type vs P-type guide covers the cell-level difference in detail.
HJT. Matches or slightly exceeds TOPCon on efficiency and heat performance, but carries a meaningful price premium and more limited domestic supply in India. Our TOPCon vs HJT comparison sets out when that premium is worth paying.
For most C&I buyers in 2026, the real decision is PERC versus TOPCon. HJT remains a specialist choice for projects where every square metre of roof is scarce and budget is secondary.
A C&I buyer comparing two quotes should weigh these five specs ahead of the headline wattage number:
Temperature coefficient. Commercial roofs in India routinely reach 55°C to 70°C. A panel's percentage loss per degree above 25°C compounds across a hot season, and across every panel in a large array. A 0.05 percentage point difference in temperature coefficient sounds small until it is multiplied by hundreds of panels over 25 years.
Degradation rate and warranty structure. Check the warranty for the exact year-one loss and the annual rate after that, not just the headline "25-year" or "30-year" figure. A linear warranty with a low annual rate (TOPCon modules typically guarantee no more than 0.4% loss a year after year one) preserves more lifetime output than a stepped PERC warranty with a larger mid-life drop.
Bifacial gain, if applicable. Dual-glass bifacial panels add rear-side generation, but the real-world gain depends heavily on mounting height and ground reflectivity, not just the datasheet's bifaciality factor. Our bifacial solar panel guide explains how to model this honestly for ground-mount and elevated rooftop sites.
ALMM and DCR status. For any project claiming net metering, open access, or government incentives, both the module and its cells need to be ALMM compliant. Our ALMM list explained guide covers exactly what to check and the current 2026 exemption windows.
Physical dimensions and weight. At C&I scale, panel length and weight drive structure design, crew requirements and roof load calculations. Larger-format panels (G12R and M10R series, for example) cut panel count for a given capacity, which lowers structure and labour cost, but need wider purlin spacing and a verified roof load capacity before ordering.
Businesses do not receive the residential PM Surya Ghar subsidy, but three financial factors apply only to commercial buyers and change the real cost of ownership:
Accelerated depreciation. Solar power generating systems qualify for depreciation at 40% of written-down value in the first year under Indian tax rules, a significant cash-flow advantage over the straight-line depreciation most other business assets get. Confirm the current schedule with your CA, since the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the earlier Act from 1 April 2026.
GST treatment. GST on solar modules and inverters fell from 12% to 5% in September 2025. On a turnkey EPC contract, GST is commonly split 70% goods (at 5%) and 30% services (at 18%), giving an effective rate of roughly 8.9%. Registered businesses may be able to claim input tax credit depending on how the system is used.
Commercial tariff savings. Commercial electricity tariffs in India typically run ₹8 to ₹11 per unit, roughly double residential rates, which is why C&I solar generally pays back faster than residential solar despite receiving no subsidy. Our 10kW system guide works through a full payback calculation using these figures.
Two C&I quotes for the same capacity are rarely comparing the same thing. Ask every vendor for these five numbers, on the same basis, before comparing price:
Comparing on lifetime cost per unit generated (LCOE) rather than panel price alone is the only way to see which quote is genuinely cheaper over the system's life. Our LCOE guide walks through the full calculation with a worked example.
Beyond the panel specs themselves, these checks separate a dependable C&I vendor from a risky one:
Comparing panel price per watt in isolation. A cheaper panel that needs more structure, more labour, or degrades faster can cost more over the system's life. Compare installed cost per kWp and lifetime cost per unit instead.
Assuming ALMM compliance from the brand name. ALMM status is checked by exact model number, separately for List-I and List-II. A reputable brand can still have individual models that are not compliant.
Oversizing without a load study. Fitting the maximum possible capacity onto a roof without checking daytime consumption patterns can mean a large share of generation gets exported at a lower rate instead of offsetting full-rate consumption.
Skipping the degradation warranty review. The headline warranty length matters less than the annual degradation rate within it. A 25-year PERC warranty with a steep mid-life step can leave less output at year 20 than a well-structured 30-year TOPCon warranty.
For most C&I buyers in 2026, the real choice sits between Mono PERC and N-Type TOPCon, with HJT reserved for space-constrained, budget-secondary projects. The specs that actually predict a panel's return, temperature coefficient, degradation terms, ALMM status and physical dimensions, matter more than the wattage printed on the quote.
Factor in accelerated depreciation, the current 5% GST rate, and your actual commercial tariff before comparing vendors, and compare every quote on installed cost per kWp and lifetime cost per unit rather than panel price alone.

Technically, most panels used in residential and commercial projects are the same modules; the difference is system scale, financing, and eligibility. Residential systems can claim the PM Surya Ghar subsidy; commercial systems cannot, but gain accelerated depreciation, GST benefits, and savings against a much higher commercial electricity tariff.
N-Type TOPCon is the current mainstream choice for most C&I projects in 2026, offering better heat performance and lower degradation than Mono PERC at a modest price premium. HJT suits projects where roof space is severely limited and the extra cost is secondary. Mono PERC remains reasonable for large, cost-sensitive, space-abundant sites.
Only if the project claims net metering, open access, or a government-linked incentive. Since June 2026, this generally requires both ALMM List-I module compliance and List-II cell compliance, with a separate exemption for net-metering and open-access projects currently running to 31 December 2026.
Accelerated depreciation at 40% of written-down value in the first year, and GST on solar modules and inverters at 5% since September 2025. Businesses do not receive the residential PM Surya Ghar subsidy. Confirm the current depreciation schedule with your CA, since tax rules changed with the Income-tax Act, 2025.
Compare installed cost per kWp for equivalent capacity, not panel price alone, along with temperature coefficient, degradation warranty terms, and ALMM status if relevant. Comparing lifetime cost per unit generated (LCOE) across quotes shows which option is genuinely cheaper over the system's life.
Larger-format panels (around 600W to 650W) generally lower installed cost per kWp for mid-size and large C&I systems by reducing panel count, structure and labour, provided your roof and inverter can accommodate their dimensions and current. Smaller projects or structurally limited roofs may suit a lower-wattage panel instead.
